The Christopher Isherwood and Swami Prabhavananda 1944 english translation of the Bhagavad Gita is one of at least a dozen translations by different authors over the last century. Ever since I came across it in 1975 it has been the literary love of my life.
Part prose and part poetry, it is a truly beautiful literary work which was published under the auspices of the Vedanta Society of Southern California and is now available as a free e-book.
As part of a spiritual practice ( a sadhana) I worked on converting the part prose, part poetry text into a complete poetry text, without changing a single original word and matching it up with the 700 Sanskrit stanzas which comprise the Bhagavad Gita.
This has had it’s difficulties as the English text follows the Sanskrit exactly 95% of the time, but not 100%. However the Sanskrit characters are a delight to see and for me, have brought an ancient text to life.
When completed it will be a private publication in the form of a photobook.
My website will be updated about this in due course.
